IBPS Probationary officers Exams

Indian Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) – is an Exam conducted by Indian Banking personnel selection board. Those who are interested in bank employment can crack IBPS for getting employed as Probationary officers / Management trainees / Specialist officers. Nationalized banks will offer job for selected candidates from IBPS.

Stages in Examination:

There are three stages in examination namely
• Preliminary examination
• Main examination
• Interview

Mode of Examination:

• Online Mode (for both preliminary and main examination)
• Descriptive mode (only one descriptive paper on “English” in Main examination).
** IBPS doesn't conduct exams for posts in all the banks at a time. A common examination for PO posts will be conducted by the banks


Minimum Age Limit: 20 years on while applying for exams
Maximum Age limit: 30 years on while applying for exams.
Relaxation in Age limit: However relaxation is being provided for the following category of persons

  • Scheduled castes / Scheduled tribes : 5 years
  • Other Backward Classes (Non-Creamy Layer) : 3 years
  • Persons With Disabilities : 10 years
  • Ex-Servicemen, Commissioned Officers including Emergency Commissioned Officers (ECOs)/Short Service Commissioned Officers (SSCO) : 5 years
  • Persons ordinarily domiciled in the Kashmir Division of the State of Jammu & Kashmir during the period 01.01.1980 to 31.12.1989 : 5 years
  • Persons affected by 1984 riots : 5 years
  • Indian citizen
  • A subject of Nepal or
  • A subject of Bhutan or
  • A Tibetan Refugee
  • A person of India origin who is a migrant of Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India
  • The candidate who belongs to other countries or is migrants should produce the certificate of eligibility which has to be issued by Indian Government.
  • Graduation with 60% of marks from an university recognised by UGC (for probationary officers)
  • Masters in Business Administration (MBA) with 60% of marks from a recognized university (for Management trainees)
  • The qualification details for Specialist officer will be notified by IBPS during notification.
Road Map to IBPS PO Exams

IBPS exams contain three stages post clearance the candidate will be appointed as a “Probationary officer”. The stages of exams are

Stage 1: Preliminary Examination

The first stage of IBPS PO exams is the preliminary exams. The syllabus and pattern for IBPS preliminary exams are as follows

Stage 2: Main Examination

Once the candidate clears the prelims exams then the next state is “Main examinations”. The main examination has two parts as follows

Negative markings: 0.25 marks for each wrong answer attempted by the candidate.

Stage 3: Interview

The final stage of exams is the "Common interview"

  • Maximum Marks: 100 Marks
  • Minimum qualification Marks
    • 35 % for OBC, SC, ST and PWD category
    • 40 % for categories “other” than OBC, SC, ST.
The Final selection

Marks scored in the Preliminary Exam (Tier-1) will not be considered in the final score. These are only taken into account to qualify Mains Exam (Tier-and Candidates need to qualify Phase-2 and Interview individually to be eligible for the final selection. The ratio of marks between CWE Main exam and interview for final merit list will be 80:20 respectively.
